Cumbrian Award

In 2022-23, Class 3 embarked on a new adventure... The Cumbrian Award. Utilising our well established outdoor learning culture, we challenged the children to direct their learning through the year to complete a series of tasks, which all have to be based in, around or to promote Cumbria, in an attempt to achieve their first Cumbrian Awards. There are 3 strands to the award which have to be completed and evidenced to an independent assessor:

Adventure

Enterprise

Culture

Adventure

To complete this element we ventured:

Hill walking in Keswick

Followed the River Duddon from source to sea

Completed weekly immersive classroom sessions at Muncaster Castle

Enterprise

We worked with business ambassadors from Franks Portlock and Kaefar (with support from The Centre for Leadership Performance) to become entrepreneurs and develop our own business for our local area. We developed our own business plan; PR proposals and budget plan and incorporated a social enterprise element into our business.

We created bird boxes, macrame craft wall hangings, pebble pictures and baked yummy cakes and made over £600 profit!

We donated half of our profits to the RSPCA and MIND. We also donated bird boxes we created to local good causes including Waberthwaite Old Laundry, a local assisted living centre and Furness General Hospital.

Culture

We learnt all about the traditions of Muncaster; from Tom Fool to the Luck of Muncaster!

We completed traditional Cumbrian felt-making workshops completing felt Cumbrian landscape scenes and 3d flower sculptures.
