Listen up and speak out. Flourishing is not a solo endeavour!
We are lucky at Waberthwaite C of E Primary School to be able to offer our pupils the opportunity to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through regular hands-on learning experiences.
Utilising our well established outdoor learning culture, we challenge the children to direct their learning through the year to complete a series of tasks, which all have to be based in, around or to promote Cumbria, in an attempt to achieve their first Cumbrian Awards. There are 3 strands to the award which have to be completed and evidenced to an independent assessor:

In 2025-2026, we are thrilled that after consideration of our evidence submission, our wonderful Year 6 pupils have achieved The Cumbrian Award!
This fantastic award means that these pupils are able to benefit from a UCAS points reduction scheme to study at some higher education institutes such as the University of Cumbria should this be their chosen future path! What superstars! 💫✨

Planned curriculum opportunities enhance our classroom learning. Examples include:
Class 3:
In Cycle A: 'Waber Around!' In the summer term, we carry out a weekly visit to different locations for our RE, history and cross curricular work through a half term based around exploration. We visit different vantage points in the area to investigate evidence of the anglo-saxons in our locality. We also consider the human and physical geography of the area and how this has developed over time. We visit a number of our parish churches and some further afield and carry out a comparison between them and the Christian art work within them.
Class 3:
In Cycle C: Wabcaster Wednesday! In the summer term, we deliver a weekly fully skills-based curriculum through an immersive classroom based in the grounds of Muncaster Castle. This takes place weekly; empowering the children to creatively utilise and further develop both their academic knowledge and skills - taking learning from the school site into real-life situations.
We explore the development of the site of the castle through history in the context of national and world history, working in collaboration with the curators at the castle; putting our compass and map reading skills into practice around the castle grounds and surrounding areas; honing our drawing and painting skills to create artwork for display both in school and the castle; exploring the biodiversity thriving in our local area AND MORE!
During outdoor learning we whittle, we plant, we draw; we build, we talk, we smile; we design, we engineer, we write, we work together; we imagine, we play and... we learn. All outside. All together.
